Increase engagement and reach more customers at key moments in their subscription journey with actionable SMS notifications.

In this article, you’ll learn how to send and manage SMS subscription notifications.

        Before you start

To turn on and send subscription notifications via SMS, you need a Yotpo SMS & Email account. If you do not have one, follow these steps to install Yotpo SMS & Email in Shopify.

To make sure SMS subscription notifications reach more customers, we recommend setting up the following:

        1. Collect mobile phone numbers at checkout by going to the Checkout and accounts page in your Shopify admin, and setting the Shipping address phone number to Required. Learn more in the Shopify Help Center.
        2. Create and grow your Yotpo SMS & Email subscriber list by adding an SMS marketing checkbox in Shopify.
        Please note:
Since subscription notifications are transactional, non-marketing messages, you do not need to get explicit consent to send them. However, we recommend that all merchants sending SMS messages be familiar and compliant with all applicable SMS marketing regulations.

        How it works

Subscription notifications are automated transactional notifications that help keep your customers updated about their subscription activity and can be sent via email only, or via email & SMS.

SMS notifications will automatically be applied from your Yotpo SMS & Email balance with no extra payment setup or effort on your part. See more below.

Yotpo Subscriptions offers five transactional notifications you can send customers:

        1. Subscription confirmation
        2. Subscription cancellation
        3. Payment problem
        4. Subscription renewal reminder
        5. Manage subscriptions
        Tip:
You can also send yourself a low stock notification under Settings > Notifications > Store Owner. This will send you an alert when a product falls below the predicted stock needed for upcoming subscription orders. You can also set up an out of stock notification under General > Out of stock.

The default channel for all notifications is email, and you can send them via SMS in addition to email. Sending notifications via email at all times ensures that all customers who subscribe to your products receive updates and not just customers whose mobile phone numbers you've collected.

        Please note:
For compliance purposes, if a customer has opted out of your SMS marketing or transactional messages, they will not receive SMS subscription notifications. Learn more in the FAQ section.

        FAQs

        1. How do subscription notifications opt-in and opt-out work?

Yotpo Subscriptions notifications are transactional, non-marketing messages, and therefore do not require explicit opt-in consent to be sent. Therefore, SMS subscription notifications will be sent both to existing subscribers from your Yotpo SMS & Email subscriber list who have opted into SMS marketing, and to customers who have provided a mobile phone number at checkout, even if they did not opt into SMS marketing. However, customers can opt out of SMS messaging at any time by replying STOP to an SMS message. From this point on, they will no longer receive transactional or marketing SMS notifications.

        2. How will I be charged for SMS notifications?

Notifications you send via SMS in Yotpo Subscriptions will automatically be applied from your Yotpo SMS & Email credit. There's no extra payment or fees. You can view the rates for SMS messaging based on your country.

        3. Are subscription notifications considered transactional or marketing?

Subscription notifications are transactional, non-marketing messages, therefore you do not need to get explicit consent to send them, and they are also excluded from Smart Send Settings. However, all notifications except Subscription confirmation and Subscription cancellation still adhere to Quiet Hours.

        4. Why are subscription SMS notifications not sent?

If your Yotpo SMS & Email balance has insufficient funds, Yotpo Subscriptions will stop sending your SMS subscription notifications, and you will not incur any charges. To resume sending notifications, you'll need to add funds to yourYotpo SMS & Email account.

Please note: Even if SMS notifications are not sending, email notifications will always be sent.

        5. Where can I find analytics on SMS subscription notifications?

Analytics for SMS subscription notifications are available in your Yotpo SMS & Email account. Learn more.
